SOLUTION TO: THE BLACK CAULDRON (C) 1988 SIERRA ONLINE INC.

INTRODUCTION
The Black Cauldron is a very interesting game, where YOU become Taran,
assistant pig-keeper of your foster parent Dallben, the mightiest enchanter in
all Prydain. This story takes place in where else but Prydain. I'm going to
explain EXACTLY where to go. So sit down, put THE BLACK CAULDRON in, and start
reading. NOTE: In the game you are going to have to keep your water flask full.
You are also going to have a food wallet to eat from. YOU MUST EAT AND DRINK
WHEN THE COMPUTER TELLS YOU TO, OR YOU'LL DIE! To USE anything in this game,
you must press F3 to GET it, then F4 to USE it. If you want to DO something
like OPEN THE DOOR, you would press F6. If there is something in a treehole
or something in that area that you want to GET, you MAY HAVE TO PRESS F6 a
couple of times before you can GET what you need. Have fun! This is going to
be a long game. If you want other SOLUTIONS or UNPROTECTS, PLEASE CALL MY BBS.

Chapter 1 - Hen Wen the Pig
Go to the door of the house to your right, and OPEN THE DOOR. Dallben will be
sitting at his desk reading. Go to the CUPBOARD, and open the door. TAKE
everything out of the CUPBOARD and CLOSE THE DOOR. Go over to the fire and TAKE
the POT OF GRUEL simmering over it. After you take the gruel, WALK OUT THE
DOOR, and go RIGHT one screen. Don't pay any attention to the GOAT or DUCK,
they are just trying to annoy you. If one of them bumps into you, you will be
stunned for a moment, but will recover in a couple of seconds. SET THE GAME
SPEED to FAST. GO to the BARN DOOR and OPEN IT. TAKE the DRIED CORN, and CLOSE
the door. Now WALK over to the FENCE DOOR, and OPEN IT. GET THE GRUEL from your
status screen, and FEED the PIG THE GRUEL. After HEN WEN finishes eating, she
will go to Dallben's cottage. Go LEFT one screen, and you will be back at
Dallben's cottage. OPEN THE DOOR, and stand there for a moment. A VISION will
appear out of HEN WEN's water bowl. This will give you some valuable
information. After the VISION has passed, HEN WEN will follow you. GO OUT THE
DOOR, and stand next to the WATER TROUGH. GET your WATER FLASK from your status
screen, and fill your WATER FLASK with water. IF YOUR THROAT EVER GETS DRY,
GET YOUR WATER from your status screen, and drink it. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. The
next part will be threatening to you. Since you have Hen Wen, and have to
deliver her safely to The Fair Folk, the HORNED KING has sent GWYTHAINTS after
you and HEN WEN. If the GWYTHAINT catches you, RESTORE THE GAME YOU JUST SAVED.
After saying all that, now GO LEFT one screen, go to the MIDDLE of the screen,
and GO UP one screen. You will see a TREE with a HOLE in it. GO to the TREE,
reach in, and PULL OUT the LUTE. GO DOWN one screen, then go to towards the
BOTTOM of the screen, and GO RIGHT one screen. You will be at Dallben's Cottage
again. GO RIGHT one screen again, and you will be at HEN WEN's house. SAVE YOUR
GAME HERE. Go to the MIDDLE of the screen, and GO DOWN one screen. You will see
a BRIDGE. GO to the RIGHT of the BRIDGE, and TAKE THE FOOD WALLET UNDER the
BRIDGE. Go back and cross the BRIDGE. DON'T GO DOWN ONE SCREEN. With the little
bit of area left, GO LEFT one screen. IMMEDIATELY AFTER THIS, GO DOWN one
screen. To your LEFT, you will see two clumps of trees. Go LEFT one screen,
BETWEEN THE TWO CLUMPS OF TREES. IF YOU EVER GET HUNGRY FROM THIS POINT ON, you
must GET the FOOD WALLET from your STATUS screen, and EAT THE FOOD in it. YOU
WILL NEVER RUN OUT OF FOOD. BUT, YOU WILL RUN OUT OF WATER AFTER ABOUT FIVE OR
SO DRINKS OF WATER. SO, YOU MUST FIND A WATER SOURCE, AND FILL YOUR WATER FLASK
WITH WATER. After you go to the next screen, you will now be at the point where
you should DELIVER HEN WEN to the FAIR FOLK. So, there is a BIG GREEN BUSH in
the MIDDLE of the screen. GO BEHIND THE BIG GREEN BUSH, to where you can't be
seen, and go UP. You have now found GWYSTYL's house. OPEN THE DOOR, and she
will appear, and take HEN WEN from your possession. CONGRATULATIONS! You have
safely delivered HEN WEN to the FAIR FOLK, where she will be protected. LISTEN
to what the FAIRY has to say, then GO OVER TO THE CUPBOARD and OPEN IT. GET THE
COOKIES out of the CUPBOARD, and CLOSE THE DOOR. While the fairy talked to you,
she gave you a PASSWORD. You will USE this PASSWORD to enter the LAND OF THE
FAIR FOLK. So, now it's time to find it......
Chapter 2 - The Land of The Fair Folk
EXIT THE FAIRY'S HOUSE, Then go DOWN one screen. This will be the only place
you can go anyhow. Now, GO RIGHT one screen. You'll probably end up BEHIND a
tree. GET OUT from BEHIND the tree, and out into the open. YOU MAY encounter a
LITTLE CREATURE named GURGI. GURGI will bump into you. You will be stunned,
and GURGI will ask you for food. GET the COOKIES from your status screen, and
GIVE the COOKIES to GURGI. After GURGI is gone, it's now time for you to find
the LAND OF THE FAIR FOLK. If GURGI doesen't appear, he will appear on the next
screen. GO DOWN one screen, and GURGI may appear, it's hard to tell. So wait a
second or two when you get to the next screen. There will be a POND of WATER.
JUMP in the POND, and SWIM. While you're in the WATER, if you haven't filled
your WATER FLASK since you were at DALLBEN'S COTTAGE, GET the WATER FLASK from
the status screen, and FILL THE WATER FLASK WITH WATER. After doing that, SAVE
YOUR GAME. Now move to the RIGHT, one screen. AVOID THE WATERFALL! YOU WILL DIE
IF YOU GET NEAR IT. SWIM DOWN TO LAND, and start WALKING towards the
MOUNTAIN. WALK TOWARDS A CAVE IN THE MOUNTAIN. (The CAVE is WHITE and BLACK).
A ROCK that comes up to about your neck should stop you. NOW YOU'VE FOUND THE
LAND OF THE FAIR FOLK. GET the MAGIC WORD from your status screen, and SAY the
MAGIC WORD. The ROCK in front of you will slide down, REVEALING the opening of
the CAVE. Walk up the PATH until you are INSIDE of the CAVE. DON'T FALL INTO
THE WATERFALL! Walk into the CAVE until you can't see yourself. Keep walking
until you start falling. (The COMPUTER will tell you this) You will be falling
into the LAND OF THE FAIR FOLK. KING EIDDILEG will fly over and ask who you
are. TALK to the KING, and when he asks to prove your identity, GET your LUTE
from your status screen, and GIVE it to the KING. He will thank you for it, and
tell you valuable information, and GIVE YOU A MAGIC MIRROR, and enough FLYING
DUST for five flights. (USE IT WISELY!) You are now finished here. Now you say,
"How do I get out!" GET the FLYING DUST from your status screen, and USE IT to
fly out of the LAND OF THE FAIR FOLK. You will have to USE your arrow keys to
fly UPWARD to get out. Now it's time to go to the HORNED KING'S CASTLE, and
GET THE MAGIC SWORD. This will be your goal throughout the time you are in the
CASTLE.............
Chapter 3 - The Horned King's Castle
You will now see yourself at the opening of the CAVE. GET the MAGIC WORD from
your status screen again, and SAY the MAGIC WORD. The ROCK will LOWER, allowing
you to walk to LAND once again. Once you set foot on the LAND again, SAY the
MAGIC WORD again. The ROCK will return to it's normal state. GO LEFT THREE
screens, and GO UP one screen. RIGHT WHEN YOU ENTER THIS SCREEN, STOP! GO LEFT
one screen. You WILL be at MORVA MARSH. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. Go to the MIDDLE
of the screen, maybe BEHIND that gray rock. GO UP one screen. GO to the TREE
with THE GOLD DAGGER in it. It will be holding up a SIGN. GO to the TREE, and
TAKE THE DAGGER. The SIGN will fall on the ground. Go between the TWO "ugly
trees". There will be two rocks you will now need to go between. They are
located all the way over to the LEFT of the screen. Their COLORS are LIGHT BLUE
and DARK BLUE. After you go between them you will be on the NEXT SCREEN. The
job here is to navigate through the "ugly tree" maze. See the ROCK that looks
like a CIRCLE at the top of the screen? That's where you'll need to end up. So
weave your way through the TREES and get to that circle. Walk right through the
circle, and it WILL take you to the next screen. Now you WILL be in a "rock
maze". This will probably be HARDEST PART of the SOLUTION to explain. Well,
here goes....... When you first get to the screen, you will see a bright blue
rock, and a blackish silver rock. This will be to your RIGHT. So, go RIGHT,
right between the rocks until you can't see your head. NOW STOP! Go UP until
the pale blue rock stops you. Go LEFT until the other pale blue rock
stops you. Go UP now, until the purple rock stops you. Now, go LEFT, until you
stop. Go UP now, until a dark blue rock stops you. Now, Go LEFT until you can't
see yourself anymore. Go UP until you see your head. Now go RIGHT, and STOP in
the MIDDLE of the screen. You should stop IN FRONT OF A MEDIUM-SIZE, GRAYISH-
BLUE rock. Now go UP, and you will see yourself climbing up the mountain.
You made it! Now, keep walking up until you can't walk any more. GET the ROPE
from your status screen, and THROW THE ROPE repeatedly until the ROPE catches
on a BRANCH. Now CLIMB the ROPE. You will now be on a LEDGE. It's VERY HARD to
explain this, and I REALLY CAN'T EXPLAIN IT. But, the object here is to CLIMB
up the mountain, (WITHOUT FALLING OF COURSE), and get to the highest LEDGE
possible. Depending on the way the ROPE went,the highest LEDGE should be on the
UPPER LEFT OR UPPER RIGHT hand corner of the screen. BEFORE YOU START CLIMBING,
CHANGE YOUR GAME SPEED TO NORMAL, OR SLOW, IF YOU'RE NOT THAT GOOD. SAVE YOUR
GAME HERE. After you get to the highest LEDGE, GO UP to the next screen. Now
you will see the HORNED KING'S CASTLE. Go UP one more screen, and you will see
a winding road. SAVE YOUR GAME AGAIN. CHANGE YOUR GAME SPEED TO NORMAL if you
haven't already, and FOLLOW the road's path. If you FALL in the MOAT, you can
RESTORE THE GAME YOU JUST saved. When you GET through the winding road, GO UP
between two GOLD pieces of MOUNTAIN. You will now be in front of a MOAT full
of ALLIGATORS. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. Well, here we go again.....
Chapter 4 - Inside the Horned King's Castle
Before you can get into the HORNED KING'S CASTLE, you obviously have to get
across the ALLIGATOR moat to the other side. CHANGE YOUR GAME SPEED TO FASTEST.
The trick to this is waiting for the ALLIGATORS to move to the RIGHT or LEFT
side of the screen. After that, press The <7> key and the <8> key to weave
yourself across. It'll take some practicing to get across, so you may have to
RESTORE YOUR GAME several times, before you cross the MOAT. Once you GET ACROSS
TO THE GRAY CASTLE WALL. Go UP one screen. The CASTLE GUARDS will be throwing
stones at you to knock you into the water. DON'T CLIMB ON THE BRIGHT GRAY
STONES! You'll SLIP OFF AND DIE! CLIMB ONLY ON THE DARK GRAY STONES. SAVE YOUR
GAME again. That way, if you get knocked off, or slip off the wall, you won't
have to go through the ALLIGATOR MOAT again. CLIMB UP TO THE NEXT SCREEN, and
you will see a window. CLIMB OVER TO THE WINDOW, and GET your DAGGER from the
status screen. CLIMB DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE WINDOW, and USE THE DAGGER to CUT
the VINES from the window. After the VINES are CUT, the GAME will automatically
take you into the HORNED KING'S CASTLE. Now for the fun part.......
Chapter 5 - Inside the Castle - Getting Caught
SAVE YOUR GAME AGAIN, and you should now start exploring around the castle.
If a HENCHMAN comes to take you prisoner, let him take you. In fact, that's
what your job is now - to get caught and sent to the dungeon. As soon as the
HENCHMAN catches you, he'll take you to the dungeon, take all of your
possessions, and leave you to rot in the cell. SOUND'S HOPELESS DOESEN'T IT?
Not for long. See the CUP on the TABLE? TAKE THE CUP from the TABLE, and HIT
the DOOR with it. After that, Go to a LARGE PURPLE FLOORSTONE in the MIDDLE
of the screen, and HIT THE FLOORSTONE WITH YOUR CUP, and when the computer
tells you the stone is going to move, MOVE to the LEFT SIDE OF THE STONE.
The FLOORSTONE will OPEN UP, and PRINCESS EILONWY will appear. FALL INTO the
HOLE where the PRINCESS is standing, and you will fall into the secret halls
of the castle. If you GET THIRSTY, don't worry too much, but GET YOUR
POSSESSIONS BACK AS QUICK AS YOU CAN. I will tell you where they are in a
while. As you are standing with the PRINCESS, Go UP one screen, then Go LEFT
TWO screens. Then Go UP until the WALL stops you. You see the line of broken
bricks in the WALL? Walk over to it, (IT'S EASY TO SEE) and PUSH THE BLOCKS IN
with your HANDS. As you may have noticed, the princess is following you. After
you PUSH THE BLOCKS IN, WALK into the room. You will see a SWORD IN THE DEAD
KING'S ARMS. Go over to the SWORD, TAKE IT, and go out the way you came in.
BE SURE TO GET THE SWORD. IT WILL BE THE ONLY WAY YOU CAN WIN THIS GAME. The
princess will leave you before you get out, so don't worry about her. She will
be safe. After you get out, GO DOWN one screen, and GO RIGHT one screen. You
will see A GARGOYLE HEAD with candles burning on the sides of it. There is a
ladder beside it. TURN THE GARGOYLE'S HEAD. The ceiling will open up. SAVE
YOUR GAME HERE....
Chapter 6 - The HENCHMAN
The HENCHMAN is the guy always trying to get you, and put you in the dungeon.
So, before you CLIMB UP THE LADDER, GET your MAGIC SWORD from your status
screen. DON'T SWING IT YET. When you CLIMB THE LADDER, you will see the
HENCHMAN. SWING YOUR SWORD AT HIM, and it will stun him for a moment. Go UP
one screen, and he will appear again. SWING YOUR SWORD AT HIM AGAIN, and he
will be stunned again. TAKE the KEYS from the WALL, and GO to the WOODEN DOOR
straight ahead. You may have to SWING YOUR SWORD AT HIM again, to stun him.
When you get to the WOODEN DOOR, GET the KEYS from your status screen and USE
the KEYS to OPEN THE WOODEN DOOR. Go the the Man, UNTIE HIM, and he will give
you a HARP. He will then escape from the castle. GO OUT THE WAY YOU CAME IN,
AND GO LEFT, OUT THE DOOR. Now, go up the stairs, and when you get to the top,
GO RIGHT ONE SCREEN. THIS IS WHERE YOUR POSSESSIONS ARE. THE HENCHMAN may be
waiting for you, so GET YOUR MAGIC SWORD ready. GO TO THE CLOSET DOOR, OPEN IT,
RETRIEVE YOUR POSSESSIONS, and CLOSE THE DOOR. You'll probably have to SWING
YOUR SWORD AT THE HENCHMAN NOW. Now GO DOWN one screen. This is the KING'S wine
cellar. THE HENCHMAN MAY APPEAR!! KEEP YOUR MAGIC SWORD READY!!
Keep going DOWN one screen, and you will be at the CASTLE DRAWBRIDGE.
GET YOUR MAGIC SWORD READY!! You have the HENCHMAN to deal with, and
something else.....
Chapter 7 - Getting out of the castle
After you get your MAGIC SWORD ready, SWING AT THE HENCHMAN, GO OVER TO THE
BOTTOM LEFT of your screen WHERE you SEE the DRAWBRIDGE CHAIN. SWING AT THE
DRAWBRIDGE CHAIN. This will CUT the CHAIN, and it will FALL down. USING THE
DOOR THAT FELL, leave the CASTLE! Now walk across the moat, and then WALK DOWN
THE SCREEN until you can't WALK anymore. The SCREEN will not change. You can
WALK ALL THE WAY TO THE BOTTOM, and IT WILL NOT CHANGE. Now go RIGHT one
screen. DON'T FALL IN THE MOAT! CHANGE YOUR GAME SPEED TO NORMAL, and go to the
middle of the ALLIGATOR screen. (Don't FALL in the stupid moat) Go DOWN one
screen. SAVE YOUR GAME, and travel the road. After you clear this, go DOWN
one screen. You will see the castle in the background. GO DOWN one screen, and
CLIMB BACK DOWN THE MOUNTAIN, UNTIL YOU GET TO the ROPE. CLIMB down the ROPE,
and BACK DOWN THE ROCK. Go back through the rock maze. Refer back to CHAPTER 3
if you need any help. Go back through the ugly tree maze, and go through the
TREE TUNNEL ON THE LOWER RIGHT HAND CORNER OF THE SCREEN. Go RIGHT one screen,
and SAVE YOUR GAME. Don't get too close to the rapidly running water. SWIM in
the water, AND GET your WATER FLASK from your status screen. FILL IT with
WATER, and GO LEFT one screen, then GO DOWN one screen. GET the SPECIAL FLYING
DUST that King Eiddileg gave you and SPRINKLE IT OVER YOU. You will be off the
ground. FLY LEFT ONE SCREEN, AND LEFT UNTIL "YOU CAN'T FLY IN THAT DIRECTION".
FLY DOWN one screen. The spell will wear off, and you will be walking again. Go
to the house, OPEN THE DOOR. There is a TRUNK here. OPEN THE TRUNK, and you
will see frogs jump out. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. After this, three WITCHES will
appear. GET your MAGIC SWORD from your status screen. GO TO THEM, and SWING the
sword. They will send a CAULDRON SPINNING THROUGH THE AIR, AFTER YOU. DON'T
WORRY! Swing at the CAULDRON'S with your MAGIC SWORD. After you hit one, they
will be surprised, and will want the sword. OFFER THEM THE SWORD, and they will
give you the REAL BLACK CAULDRON. They will take you outside, TALK TO THEM.
They will tell you that you can't DESTROY THE CAULDRON. They will tell you how
it CAN be destroyed. DON'T JUMP IN IT! YOU WILL DIE! The WITCHES will leave,
and one of THE HORNED KING'S WINGED GWYTHAINTS WILL SWOOP DOWN AND PICK UP
THE BLACK CAULDRON. GET the FLYING DUST from your status screen, and FLY UP
one screen. It will look like you are going up in the air, but you won't be.
You will begin walking again, after the spell wears off. GO UP one screen, and
navigate the ugly tree maze. After that, navigate the rock maze. Now CLIMB UP
THE ROPE, SAVE GAME, AND CLIMB THE MTN. Remember that you have to get to the
highest ledge. After you get to the top of the ledge follow the path it's
taking. GO UP one screen past castle, and navigate the winding
road again. Go between the gold pieces of mountain again. You will be at the
ALLIGATOR screen. Go LEFT ONE screen. Now WALK OVER THE CASTLE DRAWBRIGE, into
the castle. CHANGE GAME SPEED TO FASTEST. SAVE YOUR GAME HERE. Go UP one screen
into the wine cellar. The HENCHMAN MAY APPEAR! SINCE YOU DON'T HAVE THE SWORD,
TRY TO OUT RUN HIM. Go UP one screen again the the HALLWAY where you got your
possessions back a long time ago. GO LEFT one screen, and DOWN the STAIRS. Go
RIGHT one screen, and then GO DOWN one screen. Go to the GARGOYLE'S Head, and
TURN it. The FLOOR will OPEN UP. Go to the OPENING. JUMP IN, (You will land on
a ladder) CLIMB DOWN THE LADDER, GO TO THE WALL, TURN THE GARGOYLE'S HEAD.
The floor will go back to the original way it was. Now. GET THE MAGIC MIRROR
from your status screen, AND GET READY TO USE IT! YOU ARE ABOUT TO KILL THE
HORNED KING! Now go RIGHT two screens. YOU WILL NOW SEE THE HORNED KING AT
LAST! SHOW THE MAGIC MIRROR TO HIM IMMEDIATELY WHEN YOU SEE HIM. He will look
at it, see his true evil self, and HE WILL JUMP into the CAULDRON. This of
course will KILL HIM, and you will start floating out the castle on a LOG.
After you stop floating, the witches will appear and WANT their CAULDRON back.
(It will be in the WATER beside you. They will FIRST offer you A MAGIC SHIELD.
DON'T TAKE IT, JUST STAND THERE. Then, they will offer you a MAGIC ARMORED
SUIT. DON'T TAKE IT EITHER, JUST STAND THERE. They will finally get tired,
AND GIVE YOU YOUR MAGIC SWORD BACK. Now you are finished with the game. There
will now be a musical ending. (It's very spectacular)
